← A Dubliner by birth, Sean O'Casey was yet another prominent protestant nationalist and socialist, who joined the Gaelic League, learned to play the uillean pipes, and became a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Juno and the Paycock was adapted for film by Alfred Hitchcock. O'Casey's other best known play, The Plough and the Stars, created a vehement response from the nationalist community, and after his fourth play, The Silver Tassie, was rejected for the Abbey in 1929, O'Casey moved to England. Irish Theatre

The Abbey Theatre/The Irish National Theatre
Listen to "The Abbey: The First 100 Years" (two audio clips from rte's "Rattlebag), a discussion a 2004 history of the history. The first clip opens with a conversation between Sean O'Casey and Barry Fitzgerald: http://www.rte.ie/radio/rattlebag/2003/1119/rattlebag.html.

Another clip from Rattlebag discusses a larger view of Irish theatre (1601-2000) (http://www.rte.ie/news/2002/0328/rattlebag.html).

However, the Abbey is not the only theatre of significance in Dublin: another theatre, The Gaiety Theatre (opening in 1871) also shares the spotlight (http://www.rte.ie/arts/2007/1130/artszoneonlyric.html).

Wonderful historical sources are available at: http://www.abbeytheatre.ie/about/outreach.html under the section titled "2004 Special Lecture Series including many articles including "Curtain Up: Founding of the Abbey Theatre," "Riots, Rebels, and Rumpus Through the Years," and "The Irish art of Storytelling" (all in pdf format).

Yeats, Lady Gregory, and Kathleen ni Houlihan

The National Library has an interesting online exhibit about the life and works of W. B. Yeats at http://www.nli.ie/yeats/. General information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Butler_Yeats.

Lady Gregory, the co-found of the Abbey and co-author of Kathleen ni Houlihan is also an interesting and significant figure in her own right. A member of the ascendancy, she was nonetheless devoted to the cause of Irish nationalism and did much to promote the Irish language and the collection of folk tales: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Augusta_Gregory.

More information about Cathleen Ní Houlihan at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathleen_Ni_Houlihan. A traditional song at

Prayer to Saint Patrick
Dóchas linn Naomh Pádraig,
Aspal mór na hÉireann,
Ainm oirirc gléigeal,
Solas mór an tsaoil é.
'Sé a chloigh na draoithe,
Croíthe dúra gan aon mhaith.
D'ísligh dream an díomais
Trí neart Dé ár dtréan-fhlaith.

Sléibhte, gleannta, mánna.
'S bailte móra na h-Éireann,
Ghlan sé iad go deo dúinn
Míle glóir dár Naomh dhíl.
Iarraimíd ort, a Phádraig,
Guí orainne, Gaela,
Dia linn lá 'gus óiche
'S Pádraig Aspal Éireann.

St. Patrick is our hope
The great apostle of Ireland
A bright and splendid name
The great light of the world
It was he who defeated the druids
Their hard hearts of no good
Brought down the proud
By the strength of God our powerful Lord.

The hills, glens and plains
And the towns of Ireland
He cleansed them for ever for us
A thousand glories to our beloved saint
We ask you, Patrick,
To pray for us, Irish
May God be with us day and night
And Patrick apostle of Ireland

Paidreacha / Prayers

Here are the basic three prayers we should all try to learn!

THE OUR FATHER / Ár nAthair

Ár nAthair atá ar neamh,
go naofar d'ainm;
go dtaga do ríocht;
go ndéantar do thoil ar an talamh
mar a dhéantar ar neamh.
Ár n-arán laethúil tabhair dúinn inniu;
agus maith dúinn ár bhfiacha
mar a mhaithimidne dár bhféichiúna féin;
agus ná lig sinn i gcathú,
ach saor sinn ó olc. Amen.

HAIL MARY / Sé do bheatha

Sé do bheatha, a Mhuire,
atá lán de ghrásta,
tá an Tiarna leat;
is beannaithe thú idir mná
agus is beannaithe toradh do bhroinne,
Íosa.
A Naomh Mhuire, a mháthair Dé,
guigh orainn, na peacaigh,
anois agus ar uair ár mbáis. Amen.

THE GLORY BE / Glóir don Athair)

Glóir don Athair agus don Mhac
agus don Spiorad Naomh;
mar a bhí ó thús,
mar atá anois agus mar a bheas
go brách,
le saol na saol. Amen.
